For many Proteas fans it’s STILL too soon for the wounds to have healed.
For those of you who have blocked the incident from memory, a reminder of that fateful day, 17 June 1999 …
South Africa skipper Hansie Cronje won the toss at Edgbaston in Birmingham and elected to field.
Australia were bowled out for 213 after 49.2 overs with Shaun Pollock taking 5/36 and Allan Donald 4/32.
PROTEAS STILL WAITING FOR A WORLD CUP TITLE
South Africa appeared to be on track for victory needing just one run off the final four deliveries of their innings with Lance Klusener on strike and the final batsman, Donald, at the non-striker’s end.
Klusener set off for a run, Donald didn’t run, dropped his bat – and the rest is history.
The scores ended up tied after the Proteas were dismissed for 213 and Australia qualified for the final after finishing higher on the Super Six table.
Shane Warne was named man of the match for his bowling figures of 10-4-29-4.
Australia went on to thrash Pakistan in the final at Lord’s three days later, winning by eight wickets to record what at the time was their second World Cup title win.
They have gone on to lift the trophy on a further four occasions.
